Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
