The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
